From The Ground Up
A
basemap is a series of planometric and topographic
GIS layers used as a foundation for building specific theme maps
for analysis and other purposes. Basemaps can be created in many
different formats, projections, designs and data types depending
on the end users needs. It’s important to properly plan the
detail, feature sources, symbology, color scheme and layers before
constructing a basemap. Much data preparation and processing is
necessary to fulfill the basemap design plan.
GDM offers a wide
range of digital basemap products based on varies source materials
including aerial ortho-photos, hard copy published maps and existing
GIS data. The basemap design process begins with a client needs
assessment, research and planning. Basemap production involves scanning,
digitizing, feature attribution, georeferencing, layer compilation,
cartographic styling and final product plotting. The client can
then use the custom designed basemap as boiler plates for presentations,
analysis, navigation and planning.
