Up-to-date technology is sometimes hard to fund with public money. GDMIS’s work with the Texas Strategic Mapping Program, know as StratMap, is an ideal example of funding partners working to achieve multiple goals while sharing the financial burden of a large project. The Texas Natural Resource Information Service (TNRIS), a division of the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB), wanted an updated digital base map of the State of Texas with multiple data layers that could be delivered to online customers over the Internet with minimal staff effort. A team was developed that included TWDB, the USGS, the Texas Geographic Society, with USGS and the State of Texas covering up to 75% of the cost of the development costs of the data. The concepts (current, photorevised, vertically integrated digital datasets) developed for StratMap closely parallel those for the USGS National Map and the data developed will be used by both agencies.
