Human Impact on the Environment
GDM
offers highly experienced staff that are familiar with the issues
government agencies face in the areas of environmental planning,
regulations, and technical support. GDM translates agency priorities
to appropriate technical solutions. GDM utilizes it's data acquisition,
data integrations, and subject matter expertise to create innovative
solutions to assess and monitor the impact of man's activities on
natural and cultural resources.
Focus Areas:
- Watershed Assessments: GDM helps
define and target priority problems as the first step in developing
a watershed protection strategy. This comprehensive approach takes
into account threats to human health and ecological integrity
within specific watersheds.
- Watershed-based Water Quality Modeling:
GDM staff use appropriate water quality and runoff simulation
models (such as EPA's BASINS, QUAL2E, TOXIROUTE, HSPF, GWLF and
others) to evaluate point and nonpoint source impacts on water
quality, aquatic habitats, and other concerns.
- Environmental Health Risks: GDM
has implemented a county-wide GIS aimed at identifying the location
of on-site sewage disposal systems and their proximity to wetlands,
creeks, 100-year flood plans and other areas associated with risk
to surface water resources. The project provided agency staff
with the tools and information to prioritize inspection and permitting
resources.
- Support for Wetland Protection and Restoration:
Setting regional priorities for wetland protection helps target
limited resources. GDM integrates existing wetland delineations
together with satellite imagery and other data using the latest
concepts and models.
